What kind of vegetable do guinea pigs eat, and how often should we feed them those?
Hi there.
In my previous post, I’ve talked about the types of hay and pellets that your guinea pigs should be given at different phase of their life. If you still do not know the difference between Alafafa and Timothy hay, do read through about it as it is vital for your pet care.
So, why do we have to feed our guinea pigs with fresh vegetables daily? Unlike other mammals, guinea pigs are unable to produce their own vitamin c. This is the reason why we have to include fresh vegetables and fruits in their diet to prevent them from getting scurvy and other vitamin c deficient health problems.
To ensure that your guinea pigs have a good balanced diet, a wide variety of vegetables should be fed to them. Small portions of fruits can also be given once or twice a week.
Do note that you should never feed your piggies too much fruits as too much sugar in their diet can cause them to have diabetes in the long run.
List are the vegetables that you can feed your piggies and the frequency.
  • Lettuce (romaine, butterhead, redleaf)
  • Sweet Potato leaves
  • Endives
  • Baby carrots (1 per day)
  • Capsicum (green, yellow)
  • Cherry tomatoes (1-2 per day)
2-4 times a week
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Broccoli (very small amounts as it very high in Vit A.)
  • Parsley
Listed are the fruits that you can feed your piggies and the frequency.
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
2-4 times a week
  • Blueberries
  • Orange peel
These are some of the fruits & vegetables that you can feed your piggies and they are readily available in the supermarkets. I don’t feed my piggies fruits all the time but a little once in awhile as treats and they love it.
Hope my list can help you out when shopping for groceries.
A healthy piggy is a happy piggy 🙂
